Mayo Mariners do football down under style
IT LOOKS like former Mayo star Pearce Hanley will not be the only man from the county taking up the oval ball game this year. As Hanley prepares for his first season as a professional Aussie Rules player, many more Mayomen are set to take up the sport on a recreational basis with the formation of the county’s first Aussie Rules club, the Mayo Mariners.
The club is being established with the full backing of the Australian Rules Football League of Ireland (ARFLI), and this week launched their website www.mayomariners.com in order to begin recruitment for the year ahead. The club are starting from scratch with the aim of having enough players in time for the start of the Irish season in March.
They will compete in the competition with reigning champions Leeside Lions (Cork), South Dublin Swans, Dublin Demons, West Dublin Saints, Midland Tigers (Mullingar) and another new team being formed in Kerry with assistance from Tadhg Kennelly.
The league has been in existence since 2001 and is also responsible for the running of the national team which will be travelling to Australia later this year to compete in the AFL International Cup, a competition the team won in 2002. This means that players impressing for the new Mayo side are capable of making it onto the Irish team.
The league has always had a strong Mayo influence, the first ever club having been formed by Colm Cronin from Knockmore and the current league President Ciarán " hEadhra, hailing from Erris.
It is " hEadhra who is at the fore in establishing the Mayo club having returned to live in Mayo in recent months. While he would be delighted to see Mayo play-ers playing for Ireland at the MCG later this year, he is keen to stress that the club is not geared totally towards those with National ambitions.
“I myself was not a very good footballer and I got into the sport for the social side and as a means to keep fit,” Ciarán points out.
“That remains a factor with all of the league’s clubs. It’s a great way to meet people, enjoy playing in a national competition and get exercise irrespective of your sporting prowess or background. “We’re keen to hear from anyone, whether they want to coach, play or just come along for the craic”.
There is a lot of work ahead for the new club, aside from the recruitment of players they must obtain facilities for matches, team kit and sponsors, but the various officers of the League are convinced that a squad of 20 players is infinitely achievable in a county the size of Mayo. Most clubs have tended to be made up of Gaelic Players and Rugby players in the past as with fixtures played in the summer on Saturdays, it tends not to clash with their favoured sports.
Two new clubs for Ireland

The Australian Rules Football League of Ireland is looking forward to an exciting 2008, with the creation of two new clubs on the west coast in County Mayo and County Kerry. Denis Kennelly, a cousin of Sydney star Tadhg, has organised the first training session for the Kerry Kangaroos for December 28th. A number of Denis' former clubmates from the Leeside Lions will be on hand to assist, as will Dublin Demons President John Enright, himself a Kerry native. A big bonus though will be the presence of Swans star Tadhg, who will assist his cousin in organising the session and ensure media interest locally. The Kerry club has been an ambition of Denis' for some years now and having recently moved home from Cork he decided it was time to put his plan into effect. Kerry has long been the pre-eminent county in Gaelic Football and this should ensure that any recruits should make for a very competitive team. Meanwhile, further north on the western seaboard, the Mayo Mariners have begun life online. The club have set up a website in order to attract recruits in the county which recently lost Pierce Hanley to the Brisbane Lions. The club's website can be found at www.mayomariners.com and they are hopeful that some favourable media attention will draw interest from those interested in playing in Mayo and the Surrounding Sligo and North Roscommon catchments.

THE Disputes Resolution Authority rules that Cork are entitled to a point from their league match against Meath, despite not having a single player on the field at the time. “Geraghty should have taken his chance,” a spokesman comments.
The Mayo Mariners prepare for their first season in the Australian Rules Football League of Ireland by entering the Mayo senior football championship. However, four of their star players are snapped up by Carlton Blues and they bow out at the quarter-final stage to eventual winners Charlestown.
